This essay reconstructs Baudrillard’s semiology, explains how LLMs recode the symbolic economy, and maps the ethical contours of a post‑hyperbound society.

Introduction: When Baudrillard declared in 1981 that “the era of simulation begins with a liquidation of all referentials,” critics heard rhetorical excess. Four decades later, the digital infosphere vindicates his vision. Social media, algorithmic feeds, immersive games, and augmented reality interpose layers of mediation between consciousness and the empirical world. The arrival of LLMs intensifies this shift, because these systems generate discourse itself. Unlike earlier media, which reproduce static, human‑authored symbols, LLMs dynamically predict textual continuations based on probabilistic representations of massive corpora.

Their outputs can be coherent, persuasive, and emotionally resonant while remaining indifferent to truth. As synthetic text proliferates across emails, blog posts, codebases, contracts, and personal diaries, humanity approaches an inflection point in which the majority of language encountered will be machine‑generated. I call that inflection the hyperbound.

Crossing the hyperbound is more than a statistical milestone; it is a civilizational pivot. Intellectual property regimes presume traceable authorship. LLMs capitalize on this immediacy. Trained on trillions of tokens, they infer statistical regularities that let them impersonate any style, synthesize expertise, and fabricate rationales. Because they lack sensory grounding, their meaning arises solely from patterns internal to text. They are, in Baudrillard’s vocabulary, fourth‑order simulacra: models of models, mirrors reflecting other mirrors.

Large language models such as GPT or Claude are optimized for next‑token prediction. If we cross the hyperbound unprepared, we may drift into semantic free fall, where truth is indistinguishable from textual momentum. With foresight, however, we can design sociotechnical scaffolds that harness generative power while preserving the fragile link between sign and world.
